Revisiting the Prospects of a Multihull Icebreaker for Year-Round Navigation via the Northern Sea Route

Abstract

The article assesses the practicability of designing and building a new generation of sixty-meter-wide icebreakers that can ensure year-round navigation in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation for both individual cargo ships and convoys. It also considers the characteristics of icebreakers and other existing ships that can perform cargo shipping in the Arctic Zone and presents a comparative scoring of operational icebreakers, nuclear-powered icebreakers under construction, and innovative new-generation multihull icebreakers. The paper goes on and identifies optimal usage of innovative icebreakers (IIB) in the Northern Sea Route navigation. It also presents estimates of the lifecycles of the Leader-type icebreaker under construction or of the innovative icebreaker in question. Further on, it provides a comparison of the estimated average daily costs of icebreaker assistance provided in severe ice conditions by IIBs or Leader and LK-60Ya icebreaker by comparing the costs of icebreaker assistance provided in similar conditions by IIBs or Leader and LK-60Ya icebreaker combination for ships up to fifty meters wide via the NSR “shortcut”. In conclusion, the authors propose a concept of transit cargo shipments via the Northern Sea Route using innovative icebreakers and vessels of ice-class less than Arc7.
