Abstract

This introductory Chapter aims to provide a contextual overview of the African continent and its smorgasbord of contrasting people, strengths and weaknesses, economies, and levels of development. It considers the economic growth prospects in Africa in view of the vastly different state of the various economies. Global, regional and national efforts to stimulate sustainable economic development are evaluated and the various developmental institutions, global bodies, and regional structures are described, including The World Bank, IMF, New Development Bank, African Development Bank, and African Union. Foreign Direct Investment is considered as a catalyst for development. The Chapter concludes with an assessment of the pre-conditions to development of countries on the continent.
