Abstract

Festivals, fairs and events are important attractions for tourism in terms of promotion, awareness and the creation of a positive image of destinations through bringing new cultures together. They also benefit the national and regional economy and the social and cultural development of the local people. In order to increase participation in festivals, fairs and events, which have important returns in their economic, social and cultural dimensions, and to improve the reputation of the destination, visitor management processes should be designed in a predictable way that is appropriate for consumer preferences. Digital communication, technology and media channels in event marketing and management provide convenience for participants, managers, travel agencies and other supportive sectors in tourism, as well as for local people, to reach a large number of visitors, and to establish an active connection between the organizers and the participants. There are many elements that contribute to this process, including digital platforms, social networks, websites and mobile applications, and the use within these of online ticketing, cloud services, virtual and augmented reality, and gamification. In this study, tourism fairs, trade fairs, music festivals, film festivals, traditional Turkish festivals, gastronomic festivals, science and informatics festivals, culture and arts events and sport activities held in Turkey are discussed, within the context of using technology for managing and marketing. The scope of research covers most of the events organized in provinces like Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya and Izmir.
