Two Useful Models from Neuroleadership

Abstract

This chapter introduces two models from the neuroscience of leadership (or neuroleadership) that are especially useful for communicators. The SCARF™ modelStatus, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness (SCARF™) model reveals the primary threat and reward triggers in the brain, and the SCOAP modelSelf-esteem, Control, Orientation, Attachment, and Pleasure (SCOAP) model looks more holistically at human needs. The chapter also includes examples of how each may be applied to organizational communication. Lastly, we explore some of the potential pitfalls of neuroleadership approaches.
