Abstract

Social inclusion is the process by which efforts are made to ensure equal opportunities. Such efforts include policies and actions that promote equal access to (public) services as well as enable citizen’s participation in the decision-making processes that affect their lives. Microfinance Institutions of India, now-a-days, are providing ‘credit plus’ services throughout the country to the underprivileged and unprivileged people of the society, particularly to the poor women. That means along with the traditional credit services, the many MFIs are also providing other financial services like micro insurance, micro-pension, money remittance services, etc. The other services offered by the MFIs for the overall development of the clients are health services, education for the children, skill development training, etc. In this backdrop, the present study tries to examine the role of MFIs in social inclusion in India. This study is primarily focused on the case-based analysis of different MFIs to study the role of Microfinance Institutions in Social Inclusion with reference to India. The findings depict that significant inclusion has been seen in the recent years in Indian context but there is need for more such policy integrations which would aid the MFIs in providing sustainable inclusion in India.
