Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on International Agricultural Trade in European Countries

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has been shaping the social, economic, health, demographic, and psychological profile of human existence. Concerning the economic dimension, the COVID-19 outbreak has negatively impacted the main sectors and subsectors of the economy, including trade. This chapter analyzes international trade in food and agricultural products in 2019 and 2020 (January–August and September for some countries). The increase in the number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths is examined for the same period of time to highlight the impact of the pandemic on agricultural trade. The study is performed on the cases of six European countries where the number of COVID-19 cases per capita was the highest as of September 2020 (Spain, Belgium, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France). The results showed specific changes in agricultural trade balances, correlations between the parameters of trade balance and the rate of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, and particular cases of protectionism and liberalization in trade in food and agricultural products.
