Abstract

Existing accounts of societal history are constructs from what have been documented through both oral, as well as scientific investigations. Consequently, there will always be gaps for the inquisitive scholar to either contest some accounts and/or to add new material to that history. This chapter problematizes some of the critical issues to examine when historicizing historical accounts. In doing so, the chapter emphasizes that there are limits to rationalization ex-post events as the actions taken by particular actors of history may not follow reason. Nevertheless, the new methodological instruments that have evolved offer considerable room to refashion some of the historical events, and to narrate accounts that are new to the historical world.
