Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to evaluate the impact of China’s political and economic engagements with Africa, on its growth and development with specific focus on Angola and Rwanda as case studies. I examine the historical background of the relationship between China, Angola and Rwanda and the growing trade and investment between the three parties. The chapter explores Angola and Rwanda as specific cases studies and justifies their selection for investigating the impact of China on local development in Africa. I explore China’s trade and investment in these two countries, and further seeks to answer whether this trade and investment contributes to the overall economic development in these two African states. This is done by examining the aggregate economic growth and development in these two countries by analysing the gross domestic product (GDP) and the gross national income (GNI) indicators prior to 2002, when China was not yet a major trading partner in either of these countries.
