Abstract

The setting of this chapter is the South Western Indian Ocean and its wider region including countries on the South Eastern coast of Africa, the Maldives islands, and the small island states on the west coast of Africa. The subject is the work of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), an inter-governmental body, in co-ordinating a strategy and programmes of action for promoting the Blue Economy. This involves sustainable maritime development in the large exclusive marine zones of this region and the pursuit of a policy for zero waste. The IOC programme has involved a series of consultations for advancing the strategy and reflecting on specific innovative activities across this wide region. This has brought together people from the public and private sectors, civil society, and youth and women’s groups, exchanging ideas and examples of practice. The latest Forum was in December 2019, the outcomes of which are presented in this chapter.
