Abstract

Both reliability and survival analyses are the specialized fields of mathematical statistics and are developed to deal with the special type of time-to-event random variables. Reliability analysis includes methods related to assessment and prediction of successful operation or performance of products. Nowadays, products are appearing on the market with the assurance that they will perform satisfactorily over its designed useful life. This assurance depends on the reliability of the product. On the other hand, survival analysis includes statistical methods for analyzing the time until the occurrence of an event of interest, where the event can be death, disease occurrence, disease recurrence, recovery, or other experience of interest. This chapter introduces the basic concepts and definitions of some terms used extensively in reliability and survival analyses. It also discusses the importance of reliability and survival analyses and presents the outline of the book.
