Abstract

As the Middle East is torn by unprecedented levels of brutality, Jordan has maintained stability seemingly against all the odds and expectations. The qualities once presumably rendering the monarchy fatally flawed—its close association with its former colonial masters—are now viewed, surprisingly, as mechanisms for survival and a reason for the monarch to seize an ambitious role in the embattled Middle East. Most importantly, because regional disruptions have sidelined the Palestinian issue, Jordan has become the critical force for keeping Palestinian political ambitions alive.
