Abstract

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has dispelled century-old misgivings and scepticisms about its political survival, and given the broader context of the Middle East and the Arab world, this accomplishment is substantial. Despite the economic hurdles, the Kingdom has remained relatively liberal and accommodative of the ethnic, religious, and national other. When more resourceful states have questions over their political trajectory, the Hashemites and the people of Jordan can be reasonably proud of their accomplishments. None should underestimate its political and economic challenges, but going by its progress since the early part of the twentieth century, Jordan can be described an oasis of peace and stability in the otherwise volatile and turbulent Middle East.
