Characteristics of Meat Demand in Greece

Abstract

This paper provides a description of the meat situation in Greece and estimates of meat demand parameters. The latter were estimated for four categories of meats (beef-veal, pork, lamb-goat and poultry) which account for over 90 percent of total meat expenditures. The AIDS model was used as the vehicle of estimation. The econometric method involved the application of correlation corrected non-linear seemingly unrelated regressions. The results are satisfactory and agree with prior excpectations and economic theory. Demand elasticity estimates indicate that meat demand is income elastic and price inelastic.
