Abstract

Summary The paper gives a survey of some fundamental principles which could form the basis for mathematical modeling of the large scale behavior (schooling) of fish in an ocean. The principle of maximization of comfort is presented as an acceptable fundamental hypothesis explaining behavior and the consequences of using this principle are discussed. A standard Kalman filtering structure is suggested for the estimation and prediction of fish behavior from observations made by research vessels etc.
