On Protocols for Loss-less Statistical Multiplexing in Integrated Networks

Abstract

The paper analyses the options available for bandwidth management in ATM-based networks carrying predominantly data traffic, develops a rationale for loss-less statistical multiplexing and quantifies the trade-offs associated with these approaches. Distributed computing, multimedia mail, walk through virtual reality are just a few examples of applications where the current approaches for traffic control (as foreseen by ITU-TSS) are difficult to use. Very high speed networks supporting integrated services will evolve towards new, data-like resource management approaches. The new protocols allow for a good utilization of the links without preliminary knowledge of the source behaviour.
