Naming and typing in languages for coordination in open distributed systems

Abstract

Open distributed systems have to take into account a number of heterogeneities in the systems components and possibly high dynamics in the systems structure by unrestrictedly joining and leaving agents. Solutions to the coordination problem in open systems should be based on the notion of services, which are provided and used by agents. For the identification of services, typed interfaces provide an appropriate mechanism. However, a crucial issue in designing such an identification schema is the usage of names. We investigate in alternatives on dealing with names that take into account the requirements of open systems. We demonstrate that is may well be of benefit to introduce other mecha-nisms than syntactical matching on names such as their replacement by structural information or their complete exclusion. We use this insight to define a type system with subtyping that pays special attention to a flexible treatment of names. This type system is then applied to the coordination language for open systems LAURA. Here, services are identified by the definition of an in-terface consisting of operation signatures. We give semantics to these in-terfaces with the type system by discarding all names in arguments and results and by applying syntactical name-matching on operation-names only.
