Abstract

Chuquet completed his mathematical manuscript 1n 1484, at the end of what is usually known as the Middle Ages, that is, the thousand years after the end of the Roman Empire in the West in about AD 500. Chuquet’s mathematical achievements can best be appreciated against the general background of medieval mathematics. In this chapter, we can only briefly sketch some of the aspects of the history of mathematics 1n this period. For a general introduction, the reader may refer to Boyer (1968) or Mahoney (1978); forastudy in greater depth, the reader may consult Juschkewitsch (1964).
