Abstract

Summary Deforming finite element techniques are presented in the context of coupled heat conduction,gas diffusion, pyrolysis and surface ablation of charring materials. The physics of the phenomena and their mathematical model are briefly described. Effects of the deforming grid on conventional space Galerkin formulation is recalled and an original 2-D mesh deformation is proposed. An artificial diffusivity technique is retained to avoid spatial oscillations of density. The proposed numerical methods are finally applied to a plastic heat shield in a typical steady re-entry situation.
