Finite Element Analysis of a Viscoelastic Solid Sliding Over Rigid Triangular Asperities

Abstract

Summary A three dimensional viscoelastic finite element procedure has recently been developed as a part of an investigation of the skid resistance of wet pavement. The procedure is described briefly, and example calculations show how it is used to examine a viscoelastic solid sliding over a rigid triangular asperity. A comparison is made between theoretical predictions of hysteretic friction and measurements obtained in the laboratory. These indicate that the procedure successfully predicts the influence of sliding speed, contact pressure, asperity, geometry and three dimensional effects, on hysteretic friction.
