Abstract

The finite element method is very valuable when analytical solutions are not feasible. In our case we want to know stresses, strains and displacements in a concrete sample loaded with brush bearing platens. The method is also used for platens design. These platens are used to minimize edge effects in triaxial tests performed at. the ENTPE. The software, also developed at the ENTPE, generates meshes using a series of conformal transformations. The solver is a non symetrical front-end one. The analysis of the results obtained with different bearing devices permitted a correct design of our platens, of the boundary conditions it imposes and of the resulting stress and strain fields in the specimen.
