Abstract

A two-dimensional axisymmetric model formulated within the weighted residual finite element framework and combined with least squares optimization method for finding optimal model parameters, is presented The model incorporates analytical solution in terms of Bessel functions in radial direction, thereby reducing the boundary-valued discretization from two- to one-dimension Advantages of using this procedure over the conventional finite element method, rests in its ability to model thin layers of different material types, as in a pavement structure, without having to resort to fine discretization and the resulting large system of equations which must be inverted. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this model in conjunction with nondestructive field test data provided by a falling weight deflectometer (FWD), for establishing in situ properties of a layered pavement structure.
