Abstract

Radiotracer studies are often carried out in situations where pools bearing a precursor-product relationship have yet to be identified. Where the pools of interest are not directly accessible for input, or where there is recirculation of tracer, the problems of defining precursor-product reltionships and of determining the metabolic flux from precursor to product are complex. This is essentially an inverse problem in compartmental analysis, involving data which is not error-free. We adopt the approach of identifying those pools between which a steady-state compartmental precursor-product relationship can be confidently rejected. The approach can be extended to models involving non-compartmental behaviour.
