Abstract

Samenvatting Het bieden van goede en efficiënte patiëntenzorg vraagt onder andere inzicht in verschillende procesvariabelen, zoals capaciteit, capaciteitsbenutting, beïnvloedbaarheid en sturingsmogelijkheden. Capaciteitsbenutting meten we door het berekenen van de bezettingsgraad. In dit hoofdstuk definiëren we allereerst begrippen met betrekking tot capaciteit en de benutting ervan en een model om deze begrippen aan elkaar te relateren. Met voorbeelden maken we de stap naar de praktijk van bedrijfsvoering in een ziekenhuis. Hierna beargumenteren we dat de norm voor een bezettingsgraad van een afdeling een forse bandbreedte heeft en in sterke mate situationeel bepaald is. Hoe kleiner en/of gespecialiseerder een afdeling is, des te lager zal de bezettingsgraad zijn en/of des te hoger de kosten. Tegelijkertijd kan de bezettingsgraad van een afdeling gevolgen hebben voor de doorstroom van patiënten van en naar andere afdelingen. Bij het bepalen van de gewenste bezettingsgraad van een afdeling moet met al deze factoren rekening gehouden worden.
