Abstract

Sylvestre Huet: Now I would like us to address aspects connected with the nature and the challenges of mathematics research. Today, what are its frontlines, its relationship with scientific research in other fields, natural sciences as well as social sciences, including—we will probably talk about this—economy and finance with its all too well-known consequences? We could perhaps begin by defining the contents of mathematics research, topics on which mathematicians work, how this research is organized, within what structures...?
