Abstract

Summary The root epidermis of Arabidopsis thaliana is composed of files (stripes) of trichoblasts that develop into hair cells, which are separated, by 1–3 files of atrichoblasts that develop into hairless epidermal cells. This pattern forms during embryogenesis and is maintained in the post-embryonic seedling root by positional signals. The maintenance of the pattern of alternating files requires the movement of small transcriptional regulators, such as CPC which moves from atrichoblasts to trichoblasts. In trichoblasts CPC represses the transcription of WER and GL2, transcription factors that promote atrichoblast/non-hair cell development. These data are consistent with a lateral inhibition model of epidermal development. According to this model the atrichobiasts negatively regulate atrichoblast fate in neighbouring cells by promoting their development into trichoblasts.
