Abstract

The following paper assesses a large scale, three-year workforce transformation at Hewlett-Packard (HP). The prime focus will be on the preparation phase of this re-organization. In the following, we pay less attention to the “hard” factors; instead we zoom in on the “soft” factors, the so-called intangibles. We have chosen the format of a dialog between science and practice to examine the approach and methodologies of this change program. Based on the gained insights and discoveries, the paper concludes with joint recommendations. We would like to especially thank Janina Teepe, HP Human Resources, for her input and support.
