Abstract

Zusammenfassung Zahlreiche Forschungsarbeiten weisen nach, dass kleine wie auch junge Unternehmen jeweils spezifische Stärken im Hinblick auf Innovationen haben. Insbesondere kleine und junge Unternehmen sind daher in der Wahrnehmung von Innovationspotenzialen und ihrer Ausschöpfung großen Unternehmen oft überlegen (Gompers 2002; Henderson 1993; Pryor/Shays 1993). Aus evolutionstheoretischer Perspektive lässt sich diese Überlegenheit vor allem darauf zurückführen, dass Unternehmen mit wachsender Größe und zunehmendem Alter träger werden („organizational inertia“), weil sich ihre Prozesse formalisieren, ihre Strukturen verfestigen, künftige Entwicklungspfade durch bisherige Investitionen eingeschränkt werden und sich das organisationale Informationssystem in hohem Maße auf bestehende Aktivitäten ausrichtet (Aldrich/Auster 1986; Hannan/Freeman 1984; Kieser/Woywode 1999). In der Folge büßen Unternehmen an Fähigkeit zur Transformation und Innovation ein und laufen damit Gefahr, ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit aufgrund von Veränderungen im Unternehmensumfeld zu verlieren (Altman/Zacharakis 2003; Covin/Miles 1999).
