Abstract

Zusammenfassung Open Source Software, kurz OSS, ist aus Unternehmen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Was in den 80er und 90er Jahren ohne kommerziellen Hintergrund begann, ist seit der Jahrtausendwende ein etabliertes Segment des Softwaremarktes geworden. Insbesondere bietet OSS attraktive Möglichkeiten, die Effizienz und Effektivität von Softwareentwicklung zu verbessern. Dabei stellt OSS keinen Widerspruch zu kommerzieller Softwareentwicklung dar; vielmehr bietet die Synthese von proprietärer und OSS-basierter Entwicklung attraktive Möglichkeiten „hybrider“ Formen (West 2003; Henkel 2004; Dahlander/Magnusson 2005; Shah 2006; West/Gallagher 2006). Von Hippel/von Krogh (2003) sprechen vom „private-collective innovation model“. Allerdings unterscheidet sich die Entwicklung von OSS in mehrfacher Hinsicht von klassischen Innovationsprozessen: ungewöhnlich sind die Organisation öffentlicher OSS-Projekte, die Motivation der einzelnen Programmierer sowie die Anreize für Unternehmen, im Rahmen der Teilnahme an solchen Projekten eigene Entwicklungen offenzulegen. Die Nutzung des enormen Potentials von OSS im betrieblichen Innovationsprozess – Open Source Innovation – stellt daher für die meisten Unternehmen eine Herausforderung dar.
