Abstract

Zusammenfassung Nachdem Earvin „Magic“ Johnson 1980 in zwei NBA-Spielen hintereinander schwer von seinen Gegenspielern bedrängt und jedes Mal an derselben Stelle seines linken Knies getreten wurde, kam ein verletzungsbedingtes Aus für 100 Tage. Ein schwerer Schlag für das Team. Ein Mitspieler sagte den Reportern: „Das wird ein weiterer Test für unsere Mannschaft sein.“ Und ein anderer meinte: „Das wird beweisen, woraus wir alle wirklich gemacht sind.“ Sie sagten das eine und meinten doch das andere, denn fast jeder Mitspieler der Los Angeles Lakers Meistermannschaft litt unter dem Starkult, der um „Magic“ Johnson entfacht worden war. Sie alle hatten Unglaubliches geleistet, um den nationalen Titel zu gewinnen, doch das meiste Medieninteresse erntete stets der Superstar, der nun verletzungsbedingt pausieren musste. Selbst in dieser Phase war die Sportwelt mehr an der Abwesenheit des Superstars als an den aktuellen Leistungen der restlichen Meistermannschaft interessiert. Das war für einige Spieler zu viel. Vor allem jene, die sich im Zuge des Mannschaftserfolges in ihrer Bedeutung maßlos zu überschätzen begannen, sahen nun den Moment gekommen, wo sie endlich beweisen konnten, dass sie viel besser und wichtiger waren als man ihnen allgemein zugebilligt hatte.
