Abstract

Zusammenfassung Coach Pat Riley war ein erfahrener Coach und wusste um die Bedeutung seiner Schlüsselspieler als es darum ging, die Spieltaktik der Los Angeles Lakers auf dem Weg zu einer „Dynastie“ immer wieder neu festzulegen. Dabei konnte er gar nicht vorsichtig genug sein, die wichtigsten Positionen mit den richtigen Spielmachern zu besetzen. Als 1981/82 mit Mitch Kupchak ein Leistungsträger verletzungsbedingt ausfiel, musste die Lücke wieder geschlossen werden. Bei der Suche nach einem ebenbürtigen Ersatz stieß man auf einen Spieler, der aufgrund von Leistungsschwankungen und seiner eigensinnigen Art, die ihn bei anderen NBA-Teams gekennzeichnet hatten, entweder zum Retter oder zum Sargnagel für die Lakers machen konnten: Bob McAdoo. Diese Entscheidung war mit so weittragenden Konsequenzen für die Spieltaktik verbunden, dass Coach Riley eine Sitzung mit seinen Schlüsselspielern einberief und ihnen folgende Frage stellte: „Ist dieser Mann gut genug, dass er uns helfen kann die Meisterschaft zu gewinnen? Wollen wir uns auf seine Eigensinnigkeiten einlassen?“ Die Lakers-Stars antworteten, dass wenn McAdoo hart arbeiten und für ihr Team punkten würde, sie aus ihm einen Führungsspieler machen wollten.
