Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mit dem Start in die Saison 1989/90 wurde das Team der Los Angeles Lakers immer stärker von der Aura einer Zeitenwende erfasst. Einer der verlässlichsten Leistungsträger und Spielmacher, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, beendete nach 20 Profi-Jahren in der NBA seine Karriere. Die Mannschaft verlor mit ihm ihren „Patriarchen“: er hatte durch seine Aggressivität auf dem Spielfeld jahrelang erfolgreich die Leistungsfähigkeit der gegnerischen Teams beeinträchtigt. Mit seinem Abgang geriet nun aber das Gefüge der Lakers selber aus dem Gleichgewicht. Als Coach Riley vor der Mannschaft seine Rede zum Saisonstart hielt und auf den Weggang von Kareem zu sprechen kam, stand Earvin „Magic“ Johnson auf und meinte lachend:“ Riles, wir haben uns schon vorher überlegt, was Du heute wohl zu uns sagen wirst. Aber die Frage ist nicht, ob wir in den Neunziger-Jahren ohne Kareem gewinnen können, sondern ob Du ohne ihn coachen kannst.“ Coach Riley und „Magic“ Johnson lachten beide herzlich, doch sie lachten nur kurz. Denn beide wussten, dass die Lakers auf dem Papier zwar nach wie vor hervorragende Leistungsstatistiken aufweisen konnten.
