Abstract

Auszug Man hört und liest es mittlerweile überall: Die Mathematik durchdringt alle Lebensbereiche und wirkt in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft alsMotor und Katalysator von Innovationen. Dennoch kann man die Frage stellen:Warum Mathematik studieren? Reicht es nicht aus, über ein begrenztes, rein anwendungsbezogenes, mathematisches Methodenwissen zu verfügen? Die folgenden Beiträge sind einerseits leidenschaftliche Plädoyers für die Mathematik und das Mathematikstudium und andererseits eindrucksvolle Demonstrationen der Omnipräsenz von Mathematik. Ihre Autoren und Interviewpartner: Mathematiker und Mathematikerinnen mit Leib und Seele, sowie eine Journalistin. Die Mühen und Freuden beim Erlernen des mathematischen Denkens sind Thema des ersten Beitrags. Von der Mathematik als „Organ der Erkenntnis“ und ihrem breitenWirkungsspektrum handelt der zweite, von der Schönheit, Eleganz und Bedeutung mathematischer Beweise der darauf folgende Text.
