Abstract

Logistics companies have faced in recent years the challenges imposed by globalization. The thinning of the margins and the enormous costs have forced companies to review and modify their product offerings and services and their business processes. One of the most feasible and reasonable way for improving port competitiveness of logistics companies is to make better use of available resources through the adoption of information technology. This paper presents the results of some research activities of a research project called PROMIS (logistic PROcess Management and Intelligence). The PROMIS research project has been started by the R&D.LOG (Research and Development Logistics) Consortium, that operates in the area of Gioia Tauro terminal container, and that is characterized by public–private partnerships for ICT transfer and diffusion. In particular, the paper proposes an agent-based model of the entities involved in berthing, shipping, yard planning and straddle carriers routing processes and describes its implementation as a multi-agent system using constraint programming (OPL) to find re-planning problem solutions
