Abstract

In 1975 the chairman of the Mathematics Department of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam advised the Board of the Department to accept a proposal of Rien Kaashoek to invite Israel Gohberg for a visit in the fall of 1976. At that time I was a junior member of the Board. I was happy to agree, not knowing how much this visit of Israel and the many visits to follow would change my own life.
