Abstract

When I was a young Ph.D. student at Leiden University, with A.C. Zaanen as supervisor, the second mathematics paper that I read was the seminal Gohberg- Krein paper from 1957 about defect numbers and indices of Fredholm operators. At that time Fredholm theory was an exiting new area. This more than 100 pages paper, with its beautiful applications to integral operators of Wiener-Hopf type, made a big impression on me, and I talked so much about this paper that the names Gohberg and Krein became well-known in my family. Unfortunately M.G. Krein I never met — we exchanged a few letters — but Gohberg became my greatest mathematical friend, and not only mathematical.
