Abstract

Abstrait Nous avons peine, aujourd’hui, à réaliser l’importance que revêtaient ces questions de vitesse du son et de compressibilité des liquides au début du XIXe siècle. Pour nous convaincre de cet intérêt, relisons le texte de présentation pour le Grand-Prix de l’Institut de France, dans l’annonce qui en est faite aux Annales de Chimie et de Physique (t. 32, 1826, pp. 98–100) avec la mention «Prix de mathématiques, proposé en 1822 pour l’année 1824, remis au concours pour l’année 1826, et remis de nouveau au concours pour l’année 1827»: «L’Académie considère la théorie de la chaleur comme une des questions les plus importantes auxquelles on aît appliqué les sciences mathématiques; cette théorie a déjà été l’objet de plusieurs prix décernés, et les pièces que l’Académie a couronnées ont beaucoup contribué à perfectionner cette branche de la physique mathématique.»
