Abstrait Soient, p, p′, p″,..... les distances d’un point cherché M à des points fixes, donnés dans l’espace; soient q, q′, q″, ..... les distances du même point à d’autres points qui doiveat être trouvés sur autant de courbes fixes données, planes ou àdouble courbure; soient enfin r, r′, r″, ..... les distances de ce point à des points qui sont assujettis à se trouver sur autant de surfaces données; et l’équation $$ u = F(p, p', p'', ..... q, q', q'',..... r, r',r'' ,.....), $$ dans laquelle F désigne une fonction connue quelconque, étant donnée, proposons—nous d’assigner les conditions nécessaires pour que la fonction u soit maximum ou minimum.
