Abstract

Résumé En 1902 Hilbert (1) introduit des variét étà deux dimensions au moyen de voisinages dont chacun est en correspondance biunivoque et continue avec un domaine de Jordan contenu dans un plan. Il admettait encore l’hypothèse que toute correspondance biunivoque entre les images planes de deux voisinages, due à des points communs de ces derniers, soit continue. Dans sonéloge de Hilbert, H. Weyl (2) soulignait en 1944 qu’en définissant des varitéttés difftàrentiables on ètait encore obligté de suivre ce chemin indirect (« round-about way ») de Hilbert. Dès lors, malgré la critique subtile de Weyl, cette méthode a pénétré la littérature géométrique et analytique.
