Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das Wort Zahl kommt von zählen und wir zählen: eins, zwei drei, usw., einerlei, ob wir Menschen, Äpfel oder Knöpfe zählen. Mit dem Zählen hat die Menschheit in ihrer geistigen Entwicklung begonnen Mathematik zu treiben, und uns allen ist es, wie wir Kinder waren, nicht anders gegangen. Es ist der Begriff der natürlichen Zahlen, mit dem wir eine gewisse, noch recht oberflächliche Bekanntschaft gemacht haben, noch ehe wir in die Schule gegangen sind. Sie sind uns wohl vertraut und ihre Eigenschaften erscheinen uns als rechte Selbstverständlichkeiten. Etwas später haben wir mit den natürlichen Zahlen rechnen und so die Grundlagen der Arithmetik kennen gelernt. Die einfachen Regeln der Addition und Multiplikation sind uns so geläufig, daß wir sie verwenden, ohne an sie zu denken, etwa wie wir beim Sprechen die Regeln der Grammatik befolgen, ohne es nötig zu haben, sie uns ins Gedächtnis zu rufen.
