Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Tatsachen beweisen, daß die meisten Zahlworte, was sich schon auf Grund von Angaben der vorangehenden Kapitel vermuten ließ, nichts anderes sind als Übersetzungen von Zählgesten irgendwelcher Art in Worte, so daß man aus dein etymologischen und arithmetischen Sinn der Zahlworte auf die Art der Entstehung der Zahlvorstellungen und auf die wirklichen Zähl-und Rechenmethoden der Völker schließen darf. Allerdings ist Vorsicht angebracht, wenn man bedenkt, welchen Einflüssen z. B. durch den Handel die Sprachen der Völker unterliegen, und daß ferner in manchen Weltgegenden, wie in der Südsee (vgl. S. 7), auch freiwillige Änderungen der Sprache aus ganz verschiedenen Gründen vorgenommen werden. Marianne Schmidli stellt von den Nordwestbantustämmen der Ngala, Lolo, Ngata (Kote) und Ngombe am mittleren Kongo sowie von den Fang, Yaunde, Basa und Nyang in Kamerun fest, daß ihre Zahlworte von 6 bis 9 fast alle quinar gebildet sind, d. h. also durch irgendwie ausgedrückten Anschluß an das Zahlwort für 5, während sie in Gebärden nach dem Prinzip der zwei möglichst gleich großen Summanden zählen.
