Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die verschiedenen Ansätze, auf mathematischem Wege für jede Position im Schachspiel den absolut besten Zug zu ermitteln und damit also in letzter Instanz festzustellen, ob der Anziehende oder der Nachziehende stets den Sieg oder aber das „Remis“ erzwingen kann, sind als misslungen zu bezeichnen; nichts weniger als einwandsfrei sind auch die Untersuchungen über den relativen Wert der verschiedenen Figuren des Spiels1). — Sonstige mathematische Fragen, zu denen das praktische Schachspiel Veranlassung gegeben hat, sind: 1) die Bewertung der Turnierleistungen nicht nach der blossen Zahl der gewonnenen, unentschiedenen und verlorenen Partien, sondern nach deren Qualitäten, welche wieder nach den auf Grund des Turnierausfalls zu ermittelnden Spielstärken der Teilnehmer zu berechnen sind2); 2) die Paarung der Turnierteilnehmer3) so, dass jeder mit jedem anderen je eine Partie spielt und dabei jeder Teilnehmer nach Möglichkeit nicht nur gleich oft „Anzug“ und „Nachzug“ erhält, sondern dies womöglich auch stets von einer Partie zur anderen für ihn abwechselt4).
