Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Kombinatorik hat sich weder in ihren elementaren noch in ihren höheren analytischen Gebieten so entwickelt, wie dies zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts in überschwänglicher Weise von den Vertretern der „kombinatorischen Schule“ erhofft wurde. Anfänge der Kombinatorik lassen sich weit zurück verfolgen; als Zweig der Wissenschaft darf sie erst von Bl. Pascal 1), G. W. Leibnitz 2), J. Wallis 3), besonders aber von Jac. Bernoulli I. und A. de Moivre 4) an gelten. Die Grundzüge der elementaren Teile sind in jedes Lehrbuch übergegangen; die analytischen Anwendungen treten sehr zurück. So stammen die umfassenderen Monographien sämtlich aus früherer Zeit5), und tiefer eindringende Abhandlungen sind nur in geringer Zahl vorhanden6).
