Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Beschreibung wenig bekannter Erscheinungen besteht in ihrer Vergleichung mit besser bekannten. Wenn der Grad einer Eigenschaft mitgeteilt werden soll, so geschieht es dadurch, dass man einen bekannten Fall angiebt, bei dem die Eigenschaft in demselben oder nahezu demselben Grade auftritt oder besser zwei bekannte Fälle, wo die Eigenschaft das eine Mal in geringerem, das andere Mal in stärkerem Grade auftritt. Dazu müssen zwei Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein. Erstens muss man entscheiden können, in welchem von zwei gegebenen Fällen die Eigenschaft in höherem Grade vorhanden ist, und zweitens muss in den zum Vergleich herangezogenen Fällen der Grad der Eigenschaft unverändert festgehalten werden. Im allgemeinen wird keine der beiden Voraussetzungen in aller Strenge zutreffen. Die Unvollkommenheit unserer Sinne wird es verhindern, sehr geringe Unterschiede noch zu erkennen, und wir werden uns keine Sicherheit verschaffen können, dass bei dem Vergleichsobjekt eine Eigenschaft in unverändertem Grade beibehalten wird.
