Abstract

Zusammenfassung „Es gibt nur den leeren Raum und Atome; alles Übrige ist Vorurteil.“ Diese Äußerung Demokrits (zwischen 460 und 360 v. Chr.) wirkt auch heute noch provozierend. Sie kann inzwischen als Leitmotiv eines Forschungsprogramms gelten, welches sich anschickt, durch Analyse der Strukturen großer molekularer Verbindungen und der zur Bildung solcher Strukturen führenden Prozesse die Kluft zwischen der Welt der Atome und der Welt der Erscheinungen immer geringer werden zu lassen. Thema dieses Forschungsprogramms ist dementsprechend — ganz der Losung Demokrits verpflichtet — die Frage „Wie kommen die Atome zu den Positionen, die sie relativ zueinander im leeren Raum einnehmen, und welche Bedeutung oder Funktion ist mit den beobachtbaren, charakteristischen Atomkonfigurationen verknüpft?“ (Bilder 10.1 und 10.2). Das Forschungsprogramm steht damit offenbar im Brenn- und Schnittpunkt aktueller Interessen aus Biologie, organischer und anorganischer Chemie, Festkörperphysik und den Materialwissenschaften.
