Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Sozialforschung in den Vereinigten Staaten gilt zu Recht als durch eine umfangreiche Anwendung statistischer Verfahrensweisen gekennzeichnet. Diese wichtige Rolle der Statistik im Forschungsprozeß ist zwar neuer als gemeinhin in Europa angenommen wird, aber im letzten Jahrzehnt ist tatsächlich statistisches Vorgehen nicht nur normaler Bestandteil bei Planung und Auswertung von Erhebungen, sondern darüber hinaus sind eine Reihe in Europa nur Fachstatistikern bekannte Maßzahlen der mathematischen Statistik weithin üblich geworden. Eine solche Entwicklung hat selbstverständlich auch Kritiker gefunden — zumal unter älteren Soziologen, denen die teilweise recht technische Sprache vornehmlich in den Artikeln ihrer Fachzeitschriften einfach nicht mehr verständlich istl. Demgegenüber verfügen die heutigen Doktoranden in Soziologie über für europäische Verhältnisse ungewöhnliche Kenntnisse in mathematischer Statistik.
