Abstract

Zusammenfassung Felix Klein dehnte mit diesen Worten Georg Cantors Maxime, die sich nur auf Mathematik bezog, auf die Wissenschaft insgesamt aus. Sein Verantwortungsgefühl für die Mathematik und ihre breiten Anwendungen mag beigetragen haben, dass er am 7. Juni 1923 in den Orden Pour Le Mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste aufgenommen wurde, gleichzeitig mit Albert Einstein, dem Dichter Gerhart Hauptmann, dem Bildhauer Hugo Lederer und dem Maler Max Liebermann. Die durch Alexander von Humboldt angeregte, 1842 eingeführte Friedensklasse dieses Ordens avancierte in den 1920er Jahren zu einer sich selbst ergänzenden „freien Vereinigung von hervorragenden Gelehrten und Künstlern“, die heute noch besteht.
