Abstract

Zusammenfassung Walter Radermacher (*10. Juni 1952 in Aachen) war von 2008 bis 2016 Generaldirektor von Eurostat, dem Statistischen Amt der EU. Zuvor war er lange Jahre Mitarbeiter und zuletzt Präsident des Statistischen Bundesamtes. In dieses war er im Jahr 1978 nach einem Studium der Betriebswirtschaftslehre in Aachen und Münster eingetreten, er kennt also die Amtsstatistik sozusagen von der Pieke auf. Seine ersten Erfahrungen sammelte er in den Handelsstatistiken und bei der Handels- und Gaststättenzählung 1985, der ersten Großzählung in Deutschland nach dem Volkszählungsurteil von 1983. Anschließend war er mit der Implementierung moderner Geo-Informationssysteme in der amtlichen Statistik befasst, in den 1990er-Jahren baute er die deutschen Umweltökonomischen Gesamtrechnungen (UGR) auf; das Statistische Bundesamt erntete damit hohe internationale Anerkennung.
