Abstract

Zusammenfassung Bereits im dritten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert entwickelte Archimedes eine Methode zur Berechnung des Flächeninhalts eines Parabelsegments. Dieses Resultat war einmalig in der älteren Geschichte der Mathematik. Seine Ideen und die Methode, die er benutzte, wurden von seinen Zeitgenossen und geistigen Nachfolgern leider nicht weiterentwickelt und es dauerte fast 1800 Jahre, bis dann neue Generationen von Mathematikern Ergebnisse erzielten, die sich mit der Methode von Archimedes vergleichen lassen. In diesem Kapitel wird Archimedes’ Methode in moderner Notation und mit modernen Begrifflichkeiten vorgestellt. Es stellt sich heraus, dass sich die Methode zu Kurven höherer Ordnung verallgemeinern lässt. Viele der Argumente, die Archimedes verwendet, können dabei direkt übernommen werden, ohne dass es einer besonderen Anpassung bedürfte, was uns die Stärke des Archimedischen Ansatzes zeigt.
