Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das einleitende Kapitel beschreibt eine Grundsatzfrage der gegenwärtigen mathematikgeschichtlichen Diskussion, die die Forscher in zwei Gruppen teilt: Die einen, traditionell orientiert, versuchen die antiken Fragestellungen mit Hilfe der modernen Formelsprache zu behandeln; die anderen, angeführt von Sabatai Unguru, verwerfen dieses Vorgehen grundsätzlich und lehnen Begriffsbildungen wie Algebra für die Mathematik vor Diophantos strikt ab. Eine generelle Tendenz in der Mathematik ist die Bourbakisierung: Geometrie ist angewandtes Rechnen in linearen Räumen, Euklid historisches Beiwerk. Als Beispiel der neueren Literatur wird das Buch „New History of Greek Mathematics“ (2022) von Reviel Netz, der als früherer Student von Sabatai Unguru ein Kritiker der „alten“ Historiker ist.
