Abstract

Zusammenfassung Wissenschaft – und Mathematik im besonderen – ist in sehr eigenartiger Weise in die Gesamtgesellschaft integriert. Das hat sich zu verschiedenen historischen Perioden höchst unterschiedlich gezeigt. Begonnen hat alles bei Pythagoras, denn Max Dehn erinnert daran . . . daß seit des Pythagoras' Zeiten die Ochsen brüllen, wenn jemand eine große Entdeckung gemacht hat, weil Pythagoras aus Freude über seine Entdeckung eine Hekatombe geopfert hat. Freilich dieses Hundert-Opfer ist natürlich Sage, aber man nimmt wohl richtig an, daß Pythagoras als Dank an den Gott das Stieropfer vollzog. Und es scheint uns auch der Glaube berechtigt zu sein, daß nur eine göttliche Eingebung die mathematischen Entdeckungen schenken kann. So stifteten Erathostenes und Perseus, ebenso wie die Sieger im Olympischen Wettkampf, Weihgeschenke aus Freude über das von ihnen erreichte Ziel, über ihre mathematischen Konstruktionen; Erathosthenes übrigens mit einem uns erhaltenen, von den Philologen hochgeschätzten Gedicht.
